Reconciling gravity with quantum mechanics is one of the profound open problems in theoretical physics. In particular, the classical notion of space-time is expected to break down due to quantum effects at very short scales. We discuss one of the proposed approaches towards this problem, based on matrix models. This framework naturally leads to a quantum notion of space-time, where gravity is argued to emerge naturally.
