Fundamental Physics: Particles, Fields and Gravity
About Fundamental Physics: Particles, Fields and Gravity
The research focus “Fundamental Physics: Particles, Fields and Gravity” investigates the mathematical and phenomenological properties of matter, its interactions and space-time. Topics range from electromagnetism, the strong and weak interactions, to gravity, precision predictions for collider experiments (LHC), dark matter, Higgs physics, neutrinos, heavy quarks, black holes, gravitational waves and cosmology. In addition, research is carried out into the fundamentals of quantum field theory and its connections to gravity, including generalized theories and string theory.

I work on rigorous, functorial approaches to (topological) quantum field theory, using the language of algebraic topology and higher category theory. This aims to gain conceptual understanding of quantum physics, can describe topological phases of matter, and is considered beautiful by some.

David Fajman
David Fajman studies the dynamics of spacetime and matter in general relativity using methods from geometric analysis. His research focuses on the behavior of gravitational waves in cosmology, singularities, and the long-term evolution of the universe.

My research focuses on the mathematical and theoretical properties of quantum field theory and gravity. In particular, I study higher-spin theories and holography, string theory, and the behavior of conformal field theories at boundaries and interfaces.

I work in the area of particle physics focusing on the theoretical properties of heavy quarks, jets and collider processes in the context of the electroweak and strong interactions. I frequently apply so-called effective quantum field theories and factorization methods that provide improved theoretical predictions for quantum processes.

Josef Pradler
My research develops particle physics descriptions of dark matter and hidden sectors. I aim to connect microscopic theory with early-universe cosmology and with new laboratory and astrophysical strategies to search for physics beyond the Standard Model.

I develop theoretical tools for precision particle physics, focusing on collider observables, strong-interaction effects, and effective field theories. My work improves predictions for jet processes and low-energy observables, helping connect fundamental theory with high-precision experimental measurements.

My research explores the mathematical structures behind quantum field theory, especially symmetries, phases, dualities, and the geometry of quantum vacua. This connects fundamental physics with modern geometry, algebra, and representation theory.
