ERC Project of Thomas Pichler presented in European Parliament as best practice example

31.05.2023

On 24 May, Thomas Pichler (Electronic Properties of Materials) followed an invitation to the European Parliament to showcase his ERC-Synergy Project MORE-TEM as a best practice example of international research collaboration.

The meeting "Furthering international research cooperation in a fragmented world" looked at international research cooperation through two prisms: a first session discussed how policy can help promote research cooperation and what choices may be available in a fragmented world; while a second explored best practices for successful international research cooperation, through concrete examples of actual practitioners from different areas of research.
Among the five best practice examples, Thomas Pichler (Electronic Properties of Materials) presented his experience in an international research cooperation and, in particular, with Japan. In his ERC-Synergy Project MORE-TEM cooperation partners from universities in Vienna, Rome, Osaka and from a company in Germany (CEOS) develop a revolutionary new nanospectrometer as "table top synchrotron" enabling to map excitations both q-resolved and q-averaged down to atomic level, at unprecedented 1 meV energy resolution and at variable temperature down to liquid He temperatures.
Closing remarks of the event were delivered by the Vice President of the European Parliament Mark Angel and the Director of JETRO Takuya Yamazaki as well as the special assitent of the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Ambassador for Science and Technology Cooperation, Misako Kaji.
The webcast of the event, which was jointly organized by the Panel for the Future of Science and Technology (STOA) of the European Parliament and the Science and Technology in Society forum (STS forum), can be accessed following this link.
