The research of Nikolai Kiesel focuses on nonlinear and out-of-equilibrium open quantum systems using experiments with levitated nanoparticles.

His group engineers fast dynamical control of nonlinear optical potential landscapes for nanoobjects. This allows investigating stochastic, information, and quantum thermodynamic processes. Examples of use cases are macroscopic quantum state control, sensors, optimizing the energetics of quantum logical operations and mesoscopic engines.
