At the foundation of reductionism is the idea – supported by plenty of experimental data – that simple fundamental physical laws emerge at small distances out of complex phenomena at large distances.
This special relationship between simplicity and complexity is what makes the natural world so fascinating and the study of physics so exciting. Developments in quantum cosmology seem to challenge this view and reveal new scenarios which may affect our search for the fundamental laws of physics.
