On the Cover of PRL: Deterministic Preparation of A Three-component Oscillator Cat State

20.07.2021

Researchers from the Universities of Göttingen (Wayne C. Huang), Lincoln/Nebraska (Herman Batelaan) and Vienna (Markus Arndt) show how to prepare non-Gaussian harmonic oscillator states such as cat states and energy eigenstates using inelastic Kapitza-Dirac scattering.

They propose a new way to prepare highly non-classical quantum states for generic harmonic oscillators. The novel motional states could be realized for trapped electrons, atoms, macromolecules and nanoparticles using quantum interference in inelastic Kapitza-Dirac scattering.
