About the Faculty of Physics

Research Embedded in a Modern European Network of Scientific Excellence

Physics at the University of Vienna is focused on fundamental research and the Faculty of Physics is actively involved in various innovations and developments. Every year, we train hundreds of physicists for their future in research, industry, business and education.

We work on a wide range of scientific questions with a structural emphasis on topics related to

Members of our Faculty have been awarded many prestigious research grants by the European Research Council (ERC) as well as by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).

Physics in Vienna: A Long Tradition of Scientific Discoveries

Modern science stands on the shoulders of giants, as Isaac Newton once said. We are grateful to many great scientists who did research in physics at the University of Vienna to form and change the face of our modern world, including:

Collaborations with Partners in Research and Education

Our Faculty is connected to a large number of leading institutions in research and education. This includes:

  • Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW)
    • Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI)
    • Stefan Meyer Institute for Subatomic Physics (SMI)
    • Institute of High Energy Physics (HEPHY)
    • Erich Schmid Institute of Materials Science (ESI Leoben)
  • Austrian Educational Competence Centre Physics (AECCP, in German)
  • Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology (VCQ) with TU Vienna and IQOQI Vienna
  • Vienna Center for Computational Materials Science (VICMS) with TU Vienna
  • Special Research Area Vienna Computational Materials Laboratory (SFB ViCoM) with TU Vienna
