Marcello Sega (Vienna): Simulation of Interfaces and Flows from the Nano to the Mesoscale

Interfaces, intended as the boundaries between regions with different physical properties, are part of our everyday experience and help us defining and understanding the world around us, yet, leaving the macroscopic world to observe them at the atomistic scale, their appearance and behaviour can be baffling as the very same idea of a smooth surface separating two regions loses meaning. The physics and chemistry of fluids is strongly influenced by the presence of interfaces, where many interesting phenomena are taking place, often within the first few molecular layers, leaving us in some cases with no choice but to fully take into account their microscopic structure.
Perhaps surprisingly, however, the continuum limit approximation, especially in the form of hydrodynamic equations, still turns out to be extremely successful for some problems even when the relevant physics takes place at the atomistic scale. In this talk I will discuss some recent results in the physics of liquids, mainly from the perspective of computer simulations, addressing the problems of liquid interface determination and the several phenomena taking place at the boundaries between liquid and vapour or solid phases.
