Juan A. Valiente Kroon (London): Conformal geometry and spinors in General Relativity

General Relativity is a continuous source of vigorous research spanning Physics, Astronomy and Mathematics. The detailed understanding of the consequences of this theory requires a systematic study of the solutions to the Einstein field equations. In this respect, notions from conformal geometry and spinorial calculus provide a powerful framework for the analysis of both Cosmological and blackhole spacetimes. In this talk I will discuss how these ideas can be used to study the stability of cosmological and black hole solutions to the Einstein field equations, and to obtain statements about the positivity of the mass of isolated systems and the uniqueness of black holes in a range of settings. This research is carried out by means of analytic, computer algebra and numerical methods to obtain both qualitative and quantitative statements about the solutions. In particular, the conformal framework provides a natural approach to the global numerical computation of dynamical spacetimes. The ultimate aim of this research is to provide a rigorous theoretical framework for the discussion of predictions of General Relativity such as gravitational waves.
