Abstract:

The study of Einstein’s vacuum field equations as an evolutionary system has during the last 25 years dramatically increased our understanding of the structure of spacetimes - particularly with respect to the propagation of gravitational waves and their dispersive properties. Generalising these results to the non-vacuum equations brings this field closer to physical reality by allowing the study of, both, realistic isolated systems and our universe as a whole.

The Einstein-Vlasov system describes spacetimes containing gravitationally interacting particles and constitutes a remarkably accurate matter model on large scales.

We elaborate on recent progress, perspectives and consequences of its study for our understanding of General Relativity.
